Alleviating Weather-Damaged Skin
Weather extremes, or simply being out in any weather for too long can irritate existing skin conditions, create new ones and ultimately cause long-term damage to your skin.
Colder climates create noticeable skin problems. You may have experienced red, rough, cracked or dry, peeling skin during winter months. The generally lower humidity of the season dries out your skin and bitter winds further strip your skin’s moisture away in exposed areas like your face.
You’d think being inside, away from harsh weather, would solve these skin problems but they can be exacerbated by inside threats as well. Ever gotten ‘chilled’ and lingered in a hot shower to warm up? Long, hot showers strip natural oils from your skin, making winter dry skin even worse. The same goes for many soaps and detergents. They can remove the natural oils your skin produces to keep itself healthy.
As bad as winter can be for your face, the sun rays can deliver even worse damage to your skin. Sun exposure is a leading cause of wrinkles, premature aging, and other signs of skin damage.
When the sun is out and hot, you are more likely to remember to use a good-quality sunscreen that prevents harmful UV rays from damaging your body when you will be out for hours. But actually, you can receive harmful exposure to damaging UV rays even on unsunny, overcast days. Wearing a responsibly formulated high SPF sunscreen, and reapplying it after swimming or excessive sweating, is important to retain a youthful appearance and to help prevent skin damage, including some cancers, when you are going to be outside for a good part of the day.
Weather extremes like these are simply one route to skin damage. There are many, including poor diet choices, dehydration, a chronic lack of sleep, harsh chemicals, toxins like cigarette smoke and environmental pollutions of all kinds. Genetic and other lifestyle factors also impact your skin’s health.
Even those who used a good skincare routine, and wore moisturizer and sunscreen regularly, can find themselves with visible signs of aging skin and specific skin damage, including:
It’s no secret: Some things we think we get away with in our teens, 20’s and 30’s find us by the time we’re 40. We may not notice subtle skin damage as it’s happening, until one day the mirror betrays us.
